The Four Basic Steps to List Building
We've all heard it before. "The money's in the list!" And it's absolutely correct!
The first year I was making money online, I ignored this little gem. I figure not building a list from the beginning probably cost me at least five to six thousand dollars. Needless to say, I don't go anywhere near internet marketing without figuring out how to build a list.
A lot of people who email me for advice, though, are confused about list building. They're generally making it harder than it is. This article will tell give you the basic steps you need to take in order the build a list that will pay you money for years to come.
There are four basic steps to building a list:
Open an autoresponder account
Build a squeeze page
Drive traffic to that squeeze page
Mail useful information to your list and build a relationship with your subscribers
Let's look at each of these steps in more detail.
An autoresponder is software that mails messages to your list at certain times. All you do is create the message, decide when it's to be mailed, and the software does the rest. I'm not going to discuss autoresponder companies, here, but you want to be somewhat careful about who you chose to work with. (This is not software that resides on your computer, but a website service that you subscribe to.)
There are a few problems your autoresponder company needs to help you with. One of which is you don't want your emails viewed as spam. Sending out a hundred or a thousand or so emails at the same time from the same IP address is a signal that your email is spam. To combat this, the better autoresponder services rotate IP addresses. You can research other issues by Googling autoresponder.
You need to build a squeeze page. If you've ever subscribed to anyone's email list, then the form you used to subscribe was probably a squeeze page. You can make one using free templates, or you can easily make it just by learning a little HTML. Your autoresponder service will provide you with the form that you actually use for people to enter their names and email addresses into.
Driving traffic is best done through active means, rather than passive search engine optimization. Active ways to drive traffic include article marketing and pay per click.
Once you've got the traffic actually going to your email list and you have a few subscribers, you'll want to start building a relationship with them through email. People subscribe to your list because they have a problem to solve, and they think you can help them solve it. Giving them information that can help them will go a long way toward establishing the kind of rapport you need.
